Madeira
rises from the sea like a shimmering, floating garden. Thanks
to its equitable climate and fine Madeira wines, the island
has long been a favourite of the British – Churchill
was particularly partial to it.
Funchal, the main town, rises in endless terraces up a vivid
green mountainside, from the top of which there are spectacular
panoramic views. Then enjoy a fantastic fireworks display
to celebrate the start of 2009.

Tenerife, the largest
of the Canary Islands, enjoys a warm and sunny climate all year
round. An island of contrasts, you will find volcanic landscapes
in the South and verdant scenery, golden beaches and mile upon
mile of banana, potato and tomato plantations in the North. Visit
Las Cañadas National Park and witness the twisted lava
and stunning colours of stone figures – a popular film location
for movies.
With its dramatic lunar landscape and stretches of fine sandy
beaches, Lanzarote
is an island of outstanding natural beauty. Its dark, dramatic
landscape is home to lava fields and awesome craters formed by
Fire Mountain. Island highlights include the enchanting volcanic
cavern of Jameos del Agua, where a unique species of small white
spider crab thrives in the unusual conditions, and the Cactus
Garden, where over a thousand species of cacti are displayed.
One of the least well known, but certainly one of the loveliest
of European capitals, Lisbon
is built on seven hills and is situated at the mouth of the Tagus
River.
