Lying off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands - of which Kefalonia is the largest - are blessed with glorious sunshine, beautiful beaches with picturesque coves and a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
Kefalonia has carefully resisted the onset of mass tourism so you will not be confronted with loud teeming resorts.
Instead you will find a fertile landscape dominated by vast mountain ranges dressed with fir trees, small sleepy villages seemingly oblivious to tourism, capes and bays masking warm, golden beaches
.The island's capital, Argostoli, which is just 2kms from our hotel, is centred around a large natural harbour and offers a wide variety of shops, plus many restaurants and tavernas both in the bustling main square and down quiet side-streets.
The 20-minute ferry ride across the bay from Argostoli to Lixouri, the island's second largest town, is worth taking just for the wonderful views. Don't forget to take your camera!
Some of the interesting sights to be seen on the island include the beautiful Melissani subterranean lake, the nunnery of Saint Gerasimos, the castles of Assos and St. George, and the picturesque fishing villages of Fiscardo and Agia Efimia.
With over 150 miles of coastline, it is not surprising that there are many quiet beaches to be found, the most famous of which is Myrtos beach, the most photographed in Greece. For the more adventurous, the islands of Lefkas, Ithaka and Zante are all just over an hour away by ferry.
The
Hotel Mediterranée
The 'A' Grade Hotel Mediterranée, situated just above a small bay with a lovely sandy beach, offers spectacular views across to the Lixouri peninsular. The clear waters of the bay make it ideal for swimming, boating and water skiing. Although only 300 metres from the resort centre (up a short steep incline), the hotel is in a quiet position away from the main road.
The beach, with its hotel-owned self-service restaurant offering a wide selection of lunchtime snacks, can be accessed either by steps, ramps or a lift. Beds and sun umbrellas can be hired on the beach for a small charge. The beds around the large seawater pool are free of charge as are the umbrellas around the pool. The pool area is spacious and you can enjoy lovely views whilst sipping a drink from the pool bar.
The hotel offers excellent facilities; a tennis court, ping-pong tables, watersports, 3 shops, hairdresser, 24-hour reception, bar, lounge area and safety deposit box hire. All rooms are spacious, adequately furnished with one double and one single bed and have telephone, satellite TV, fridge, bath, shower and a balcony. Breakfast and dinner are both buffet style.
The Weather
The average maximum daily temperature in Kefalonia in September is a very pleasant 26° (compared to 19° in London).
Our
Opinion
This will be our twelfth visit to the Hotel Mediterranée. All of our previous groups have been full of praise for the friendliness of the staff, the standard of the food and the location of the hotel.
This must be put into the context that, whilst the hotel offers more facilities and higher standards than most Greek hotels, we would prefer to describe it as a good 3-star establishment.
Kefalonia is an island where you can get back to the “real Greece” if you want to, away from bustling crowds, still finding deserted beaches and tavernas where eating out is a delight.
There are some interesting excursions to pretty villages and spectacular scenery, although the earthquake of 1953 destroyed most of the ancient sites.
