Hotel Mediterranée, Kefalonia, Greece
May 2022 - 10/11/14 nights Half-Board

The Bay

Lying off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands - of which Kefalonia is the largest - are blessed with glorious sunshine, beautiful beaches with picturesque coves and a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Beach

Kefalonia has carefully resisted the onset of mass tourism so you will not be confronted with loud teeming resorts. Instead you will find a fertile landscape dominated by vast mountain ranges dressed with fir trees, small sleepy villages seemingly oblivious to tourism, capes and bays masking warm, golden beaches. Our Hotel is set on one of these beautiful bays in the village of Lassi.

ArgostoliThe island's capital, Argostoli, which is just 2kms from our hotel, is centred around a large natural harbour and offers a wide variety of shops, plus many restaurants and tavernas both in the bustling main square and down quiet side-streets.

The 20-minute ferry ride across the bay from Argostoli to Lixouri, the island's second largest town, is worth taking just for the wonderful views. Don't forget to take your camera!

Some of the interesting sights to be seen on the island include the beautiful Melissani subterranean lake, the nunnery of Saint Gerasimos, the castles of Assos and St. George, and the picturesque fishing villages of Fiscardo and Agia Efimia.

With over 150 miles of coastline, it is not surprising that there are many quiet beaches to be found, the most famous of which is Myrtos beach, the most photographed in Greece. For the more adventurous, the islands of Lefkas, Ithaka and Zante are all just over an hour away by ferry.

The Weather
The average maximum daily temperature in Kefalonia in May is a very pleasant 25º (compared to 16º in London)

Our Opinion

This Greek 'A' Grade hotel (4T rated by Tui) is so popular with our clients that we have featured it many times and have people that return time and again. This springtime visit gives us the chance to enjoy the wild flowers that make the island so pretty at this time of year. All of our previous groups have been full of praise for the friendliness of the staff, the standard of the food and the location of the hotel. This must be put into the context that, whilst the hotel offers good facilities and a reasonable standard, it is an older, family owned Greek style hotel (which for many adds to its charm) with adequately furnished rooms in a simple style, but it is the simplicity and location that makes it a true winner.

Kefalonia is an island where you can get back to the “real Greece” if you want to, away from bustling crowds, still finding deserted beaches and tavernas where eating out is a delight. There are some interesting excursions to pretty villages and spectacular scenery, although the earthquake of 1953 destroyed most of the ancient sites.
